Art Director/Artist
We are looking for someone for Leaving Sanctuary who can take ownership of the visual direction and produce visual art for our game.
Who are you?
- We imagine you are confident enough to take on the Art Director role for an ambitious indie game, and can define the visual style and produce the necessary documentation. You may have other projects, work freelance or have a full-time job, but you have the capacity to take this on.
- You may have experience creating 2D assets, maybe even simple animations of 4–12 frames.
- You are proud of what you do and like doing good work, but you also care about production and want to finish what you start.
- We expect you to be independent, take initiative and be able to take ownership of your field, but you will of course be able to discuss and spar with the rest of the team.
- You also want to contribute art for the website, UI and Steam store.
- Experience from the games industry or Godot is a big plus, but not a requirement.
- You should be fluent in English, but it is not a requirement.
- Ideally, we want someone who can own the art direction alone, but we are open to several artists contributing to production.
About the project
The game will not use AI-generated art or music.
Leaving Sanctuary is a “dark cozy game” made in Godot. We are about 1.5 years into development, while music and story started about three months ago. You will help shape the identity of the game from an early stage.
The game world is set in a post-apocalyptic Norway. It is not horror, and it is not gore, but it is dark and atmospheric. A parasite raises the dead, and the player must survive in this new reality. See the moodboard for examples of what we have had in mind. We are currently imagining 2D top-down pixel art.
That said, we want you to develop the visual style in the way you want to interpret it, and we are open to other suggestions. This will happen in collaboration with the developer, musician and writer, but you will have close to full creative freedom.
There are five of us: a developer/producer from Norway, a musician from the UK living in the Netherlands, a writer from the UK, a UX designer from the UK, and a PR/community lead from the UK living in the US. Everyone has a full-time job, and we do this on the side. We collaborate on Discord.
What can we offer?
- We will of course write a written agreement that both parties are comfortable with.
- Scope by agreement, but you should have at least 10 hours available per month and want to be part of the project from start to finish.
- Compensation by agreement. We are open to paying an agreed hourly rate, giving you a share in the game or paying a fixed price for assets. Or a combination.
- You can of course work when and where you want, and use the tools you prefer.
- You can retain the IP to your art if you want; we will agree on that if relevant, but we need unlimited rights to use everything you create for the game.
- You can of course use everything in your portfolio, and you will be credited in the game.
Want to hear more?
Either send an email to robben.games@outlook.com or add Robben1 on Discord.
The only thing we need is a portfolio and a short description of your experience, or a CV. You are also welcome to write a short text about what you enjoy working on most, but that is not a requirement.
If we think you could be a good fit, the producer and developer, Robben, will contact you so we can agree on next steps. You will hear from us either way, even if we do not think you are the right fit for this project.
